The Company

Share was established in 1981 and is the largest activity centre in Northern Ireland and Ireland, with over 15,000 visitors annually. Share provides opportunities for disabled and non-disabled people to participate in a wide range of educational, recreational and creative arts programmes including general outdoor pursuits such as camping and kayaking.

Share is located on a 60 acre site on the shores of Upper Lough Erne near Lisnaskea, Co. Fermanagh. Services and facilities are available on both a residential and a daily basis.
Share has an environmental policy and is committed to using renewable energy systems if financially and technically feasible.

The Challenge

As a business with a stated environmental focus, Share wanted to use a renewable form of energy to meet the total annual heating load of the site, broken down as follows:

• 18 chalets
• Leisure Suite and Swimming Pool
• Arts Arena
• Reception

The Challenge was to identify a solution that provided heat from a renewable source yet was sufficiently cost effective to give an acceptable payback time on the installation capital cost.

The Solution

Share employed a Consultant in early 2015 to identify the most cost-effective renewable heat option. Following a detailed technical and economic appraisal, the optimum solution was to install four 99kW biomass boilers fuelled by wood pellet to meet the total annual heat load of the site. The total cost of the installation, including civil works and new sheds to house the boilers, thermal stores, compressors, pellet storage silos auger delivery systems for pellet and associated pipework hydraulic circuitry was approximately £175,000.

The Outcome

Renewable heat sourced from biomass fuel was awarded 6.4p/kWh up to 99kW under the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme until February 2016 when the scheme was terminated. Four 99kW boilers and associated works were installed in mid-2015 with the system qualifying for an annual payment of at least £40,000. Payback on the initial capital investment will be approximately 5 years which was deemed acceptable. The payment is guaranteed for 20 years meaning that Share will benefit by at least £800,000 over this period.
